For Earth Day 2022, ASBCI member GreenEarth Cleaning co-ordinated a country-wide clothes drive in the US on Sunday April 24.

Many affiliated dry cleaner stores joined in to encourage customers to clear out clothes that are no longer worn and made sure they were cleaned and donated rather than ending up in landfill.

According to McKinsey Sustainability, on average, Americans throw away 81 lbs of textiles each, every year. This amounts to 26 billion pounds of textile waste in the United States alone.  In addition, recent data from WRAP, suggests that £140m of clothing is sent to landfill in the UK each year, so donating clothes really needs to be the way forward.

GreenEarth hosted a clothes drive at local bar in Kansas City and collected over 1,000lbs of clothing on the day. Whilst they are still waiting for final figures from all affiliates, it is anticipated that over 4,000lbs of clothing will be collected as a whole, beating the previous record.

The clothes collected will donated to the charity Big Brother Big Sister, a non-profit organisation whose mission is to ‘create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth’. Adult volunteers are matched with children from age five to young adulthood.

GreenEarth and its employees also took the opportunity to set new company and individual objectives, from regular litter pick ups in parks to ditching the car. The company has already booked in its clothes drive for 2023, so if you’re US based and wish to get involved, you can contact them via their website.
