Dr Quye will explain the textile history significance of these rare eighteenth-century dye books, describe highlights from the many dyeing instructions and colourful dyed patterns in the books and show how interdisciplinary research from historical textual study, textile history, scientific material analysis and conservation science has led to recognition of the collection as protected heritage. The presentation will be followed by a Q&A.
Speaker:
Dr Anita Quye, Senior Lecturer in Conservation Science and Head of History of Art at the University of Glasgow, graduated from the Universities of Strathclyde and Glasgow with a chemistry degree and forensic toxicology doctorate, then worked for National Museums Scotland in the Department of Conservation and Analytical Research and on the Royal Museum Project for 20 years before taking up her lectureship in 2010. Her heritage science research of natural and synthetic dyed textiles in archives and museums combines chromatographic analysis with their material, decorative art and technical histories. Anita is especially interested in eighteenth and nineteenth century dyeing manuals and pattern books like those in the Bradford College Textile Archive, and her investigations include the chemical diversity of early triarylmethane dyes besides recognising the importance of the Crutchley Archive and leading its research.

Recognise how natural dyes were used for colour creation in the past
