The History and Development of Colour Measurement

Date: Thursday 8th October
Time: 14.00 (UK time)
Duration: One hour

Cost: $5.00 / Free to SDC members (see below for the discount code)

This webinar will cover the reasons why we need to measure colour and will focus on the colour measurement of surfaces. It will look at the history of colour matching experiments which led to the development of instrumental colour measuring systems. The relationship between the way that the human eye and brain interprets colour appearance will be explored to illustrate how equations have been developed to allow colour measuring instruments to “mimic” the human eye.

The use of colour difference measurements for comparing coloured samples with standards (pass/fail) will also be covered. The development of colour measuring instruments from the 1930s to the present day will be illustrated. The presentation will be followed by a Q&A. This webinar is organised by the SDC North of England Region.

This session will complement two earlier webinars: Colour Communication and There is more to Colour Measurement than just CIE L*a*b*. These are now available on demand, although you don’t need to have heard the previous webinars to benefit from this one.

Speaker:
Dr Christine Holdstock MRSC, CCol ASDC, FSDC, FHEA, Colour Science Consultant, became involved in colour when she joined the dyeing department of Wira (the Wool Industries Research Association) in Leeds. Christine was a member of the Department of Colour Chemistry and Dyeing at the University of Leeds for over 20 years. She was awarded the SDC’s Silver medal and is also a Fellow of the SDC.

Learning outcomes:

- To develop your understanding of how colour measurement relates to human colour vision.
- To give you an appreciation of how colour measuring instruments have been developed and improved, and their importance today.
