The Martindale Instrument gets a makeover

The next generation of Martindale instrument has been launched by James Heal.

Three years in development, the Martindale Motion is a re-imagined nine-station Martindale instrument with individual lifting heads, offering the flexibility to run each station independently for different textile tests concurrently.

James Heal created the first Martindale test instrument in the 1940s. When it hit 80 years of age, the business decided to take a fresh look at this classic instrument. The new machine allows each test to run to completion without the need for intervention or checking at intervals. Once set up, the Martindale Motion can be left running with the sample holders automatically lifting at the required evaluation points, freeing up the operator for other tasks until the abrasion or pilling test is fully completed, including overnight.

Each sample is kept intact at the end point for evaluation and checking, reducing queries on grading or the need for re-testing. Further refinements include a new hinged access to change the self-aligning drive pins, allowing quick and safe switching between tests.
