The collaboration aims to accelerate the adoption of bio-derived spandex across the global apparel and textile industry.
Under the agreement, Texhong ‒ a major supplier of core-spun cotton textiles ‒ will work exclusively with The Lycra Company to develop customised yarns using the renewable fibre, which is partially derived from dent corn. The new fibre is engineered to maintain the elasticity, comfort, and durability associated with conventional Lycra fibre while reducing environmental impact. A recent cradle-to-gate life cycle assessment found the material could cut carbon emissions by up to 32% compared with fossil-derived Lycra fibre.
‘Renewable Lycra fibre already boasts a mature foundation for commercial adoption. The partnership with Texhong will further expand its industrial scale,’ said Jason Wang, Lycra’s vice president of Asia.
The partnership builds on a nearly 20-year relationship between the two companies, including collaboration on Lycra dualFX fabric technology.
