Hyosung was recognised for its regen BIO elastane made from sugarcane-derived BDO in the Innovation category. By replacing fossil-fuel derived BDO with a plant-based alternative, produced from the fermentation of sugars in sugarcane, the company has managed to reduce the impact of the raw material stage of elastane production.
The company also won the Environmental award for its carbon-reduction strategy for elastane production. Hyosung estimates this will reduce carbon emissions by up to 55% in comparison with traditional elastane production through a combination of the use of sugarcane as feedstock, the co-location of Hysoung’s bio-BDO and elastane production facilities in the same region of Vietnam to minimise transport, and a reduction in water use.
Finally, in the Investment category, Hyosung was recognised for its commitment to invest US$1 billion in building and upgrading its manufacturing infrastructure in Vietnam dedicated to sustainable, bio-based elastane production.
