James Heal Technical Visit

Following the success of last year’s technical visit to James Heal, we are delighted to announce the date for the next visit to this well-established manufacturing and testing facility in Halifax. This visit is FREE to ASBCI members. Established over 150 years ago in Halifax, James Heal designs and manufactures premium quality textiles testing instruments and consumables, used by global brands and clothing manufacturers, independent testing houses and universities worldwide.
The technical visit including lunch will take place on Wednesday 12th June 2024 – starting at 10.00am for tea, coffee and registration and finishing at 4.00pm.
Who is it for? This technical visit will be of interest to anyone involved in the manufacturing, sourcing, or testing of textile-based products from everyday clothing, sports and outdoor wear to protective workwear, accessories, and footwear, even home furnishings.
What will the experience cover?
In this full day event, you will briefly look at how textile testing instruments are designed and made in Halifax by James Heal on a short factory tour.
This will be followed by immersive technical sessions in each of the labs focusing on:
- Live instrument demos to provide understanding of different types of tests
- Importance of testing
- What the testing results will show you
- Consumables and why they are needed for accurate repeatable testing
- Test your own fabric*
*As well as being the first to see a live demo of the new James Heal Titan 25 universal testing machine in the lab, there will also be the opportunity to gain an insight into testing using your own fabric or garment sample and to ask technical experts your testing questions!
Types of testing that could be undertaken on your fabric sample, garment or footwear include tensile strength, compression, abrasion, pilling and snagging, moisture wicking, dry rate, air permeability, water resistance, colour fastness, tear strength, stretch and recovery, burst strength, light fastness, and more.
As time is limited, samples will need to be supplied in advance for preparation, and a selection will be tested in the workshop sessions on the day. Details of requirements upon request.
