ASBCI Members Only Technical Visit to John Smedley, Lea Mills, Derbyshire DE4 5AG

Tuesday 21st May 2019, 1.30 – 3.30pm

Said to be the oldest continuously working factory in the world, Smedley’s make high quality knitwear using a variety of technologies – from traditional manufacturing to the latest Shima Seiki ‘whole garment’ knitting machines. The visit sets out to provide an overview of the whole process, including a look at the unique archive of knitting industry memorabilia.

Starting with top quality yarns such as sea-island cotton, you will see how traditional designs with a modern twist are manufactured for sale around the world. The factory shop is also well worth a visit!

Please contact the Halifax office on 01422 354666 to book a place.  Please note that numbers are limited to 12 ASBCI members, on a first-come basis.  Members will be asked to make a £5 contribution to the Smedley Archive Trust, a charity that helps preserve this part of the Derwent Valley World Heritage site, where the modern textile industry started nearly 250 years ago.
