The ASBCI 2013 Student Conference “Fashion Perspectives” was held at the University of Huddersfield on 6th November, which hosted a day of thought-provoking talks to over 200 students that were in attendance from across the country.

Chris Thierry, ASBCI Chairman of the Student Membership Committee, welcomed some of the leading experts in fashion and textiles who shared invaluable insight and knowledge on the future direction of one of the toughest industries to break into.

The fantastic line-up of speakers included fashion journalist and academic Colin McDowell, who encouraged students to be inquisitive and to always challenge the industry with questions. Susanne Baldwin, senior lecturer at London College of Fashion, explained just how crucial the role of creative pattern cutting is in the design process. Mark Batty, demonstrated with live sales feeds exactly why ASOS.COM is the number one daily visited apparel site, whilst Mike Spenley from Shop Direct left students with food for thought over the importance of ethical sourcing. Internet psychologist Graham Jones revealed key pointers to keep consumers engaged online, and rounding up the event was Ed Gribbin, from Alvanon, who provided the audience with a great deal of practical advice on garment fit and how it is a major factor for conversion rates and customer loyalty.
