Bureau Veritas Consumer Products Services UK, whose testing laboratory is located in Warrington, Cheshire, is pleased to announce it has been accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) to test for the compliance and safety of candles. As candles have grown in popularity with consumers over the past decade, so has the potential safety concern with their use. SDC North of England Region will host 'Global Sustainability Initiatives: Hazardous chemicals and the impact of the Greenpeace Detox Campaign on the textile dyeing and printing supply chain' on 24 September from 6.15pm-9.00pm at the Mercure Norton Grange Hotel in Castleton. The next Textile Institute training short course, 'Introduction to Textiles', will be held from 30 September - 2 October in Manchester. This intensive three day training short course is organised for the benefit of all those who are engaged in manufacture, research and development as well as the commercial aspects of textile business. The course is made up of seven modules covering fibres, yarns, weaving, warp and weft knitting, nonwoven fabrics, dyeing and finishing, and fabric testing and analysis.

The two technical visits to Johnson Cleaners in Rugby last month proved to be as popular as ever. Members were taken through the cleaning procedures and technologies for a fascinating range of products, from wedding gowns to leather handbags, and even feather duvets. Emphasis was on the latest silicone / GreenEarth facilities as being the modern environmentally friendly method. Professional cleaning is often an under-appreciated aspect of garment care, and those involved in clothing product development and garment labelling can learn much from seeing operations for themselves.

New REACH updates


The European Union regulation concerning the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and restriction of CHemicals (REACH) has announced new updates on Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC's) in finished goods and packaging. This new document outlines the responsibilities for retailers, importers and manufacturers, as well as providing a 'candidate list' of 151 substances published by the European CHemicals Agency (ECHA).
